My name is Olcay, I was born in 1990 in Istanbul. I would like to share with you the stages of my brain tumor treatment that started in November 2019.

I will begin my story by first explaining how the disease was diagnosed. Sudden numbness was occurring on the left side of my body, during the one and a half year period prior to the diagnosis. We attributed this situation to my intense work pace, and when these attacks continued, we wanted to see a doctor and we applied to the first internal medicine specialist that came to our mind. He said that based on the results of the general tests, my body values were normal and that I should stay away from stress a little. When we were following the doctor's orders, we had embraced the possibility of this being psychological and I also received psychiatric treatment while the numbness continued. During this treatment period, I was made aware that similar symptoms were present in the so-called anxiety disorder. However, seeing that the numbness persisted and became more frequent, my wife made an appointment on my behalf with the neurology department and we had an MRI. When we received our MRI result and went to our doctor, we were told that there was a 6 cm mass in my brain. Since this mass was close to the motor cortex, it required a professional intervention, otherwise I was very likely to die on the operating table or have a stroke. At this stage, our paths crossed with Prof. Erkan Kaptanoğlu, M.D., who performed my surgery. Dr. Erkan conveyed all the information about my disease and all the possibilities to be experienced as a result of the operation and we made the decision to have the operation. My surgery took about 9 to 10 hours and they had done everything they could for the intervention. When they brought me to the room, I couldn't move my left side for about 4-5 days, I was trying to stand up and walk in certain times during the day, and finally my left side was restored.

Of course, this period involving the diagnosis, the decision to have the surgery and the aftermath was too long and detailed to fit in simple paragraphs. Because in this process, every choice creates a possibility, and these are not exactly things that people will be willing to go through. In this process, we also consulted the opinions and ideas of many doctors. There were two important factors for us in choosing Dr. Erkan. Although I initially had no complaints after a traffic accident I had at the age of eighteen, in the following years, I was having increasingly more back pains, especially after the first and second times I gave birth. Many doctors I went to in Istanbul, both private practice and university, said that I had a herniated disc and prescribed me temporary treatments (such as corset medicine, physical therapy). Although I was always very energetic and active, I have lived the most precious 30 years of my life in pain with a poor quality of life.

I first went to the University Research Hospital, Department of Physical Therapy to be examined in regards to my complaints for neck pain. They referred me to the neurosurgery department because in the MRI, a mass in the spinal cord had appeared.

They said that I should have surgery, but if I do have surgery, there would be a loss of sensation in my fingers. The risks of the surgery were many. I didn't want to have surgery. My son researched neurosurgeons on the internet.

My name is Selin, I am 16 years old. I would like to briefly talk about how I realized I had scoliosis, the difficulties I experienced, how I decided to have surgery and what I experienced after the surgery.

For as long as I can remember, I have been swimming.Thanks to this sport, we were able to notice that I had scoliosis earlier. The curvature in my stance had concerned my family and my coach. Since scoliosis is more frequently seen nowadays, we went for a check-up immediately. When my doctor said that I was at the beginning stage of scoliosis, we realized that our concern was not for nothing. Although it was not advanced enough to require the use of a corset at first, it progressed gradually over time and my doctor said that I should use the corset.

I used a regular corset for about a year, but stopped using it later because of the discomfort and the stress I was under due to my exams. When I went back for a check up again, the scoliosis had reached a serious level, we learned that the corset could no longer be useful and that surgery was inevitable. Since the possibilities were limited in the city where I live, we entered into a rigorous research with my family, and as a result of this research, we found Prof. Erkan Kaptanoğlu in Istanbul. We made an appointment for the examination and went to Istanbul.

We learned after the necessary procedures, that a surgical operation was required, and that I may have problems in the future, and that I should have the surgery because of my age. In 2015, when I was playing professional volleyball, as a result of a fall with a weight of 80 kilograms on me, I started to have pains in my waist and my left leg.

One day, when I was going down the stairs, I felt a numbness in my left leg and I fell down, so I went to the hospital. I had CT taken and I was told I needed surgery.

Based on research and recommendations, we went to Dr. Erkan. He diagnosed me with L5-S1 spondylolisthesis and scheduled for surgery. I had the operation in 2016. A total of 6 screws on the L-4, L-5, S-1 were attached, along with osteofusion.

I had no pain after the surgery. After a period of 2.5 years, pains started in my waist and my left leg again and when I went for a check up, I took my CT results with me and learned that the screws in S1 were broken. Another surgery was scheduled.
